The protected Häränsilmä kettle pond is located in Salpausselkä, and it is part of the beautiful sports and recreation areas in Salpausselkä. The pond covers an area of 0.2 ha. The kettle pond was formed during the Ice Age, when an enormous block of ice was buried between layers of soil.
Salpausselkä Ridge is a terminal moraine, also formed during the Ice Age, which is 2 km wide at its widest. Salpausselkä functions as the Southern boundary of the lakes of the Finnish lake district. The longitudinal ridges are remnants of the Baltic Sea’s former coastline. The highest point in Lahti is located in Salpausselkä, at 174 metres above sea level and 94 metres above the surface of Lake Vesijärvi. The forests in Salpausselkä are mainly heath forest, with some deciduous woodland. Salpausselkä has good tracks and trails for walking and skiing, in addition to smaller nature trails.
