Take a bite out of Lahti - tasting new flavors with a hint of culture

Join to our culinary tour which truly leads you to secrets of Lahti’s culinary culture: the origins of the local food, seasonal changes and new flavors added with a hint of culture! Only one hour away from the city of Helsinki and its airport!

DAY 1: Chasing truffles and tasting local whiskey

Arrival to Helsinki and drive with a rental car to Lahti. Accommodation in double or single rooms at Solo Sokos Lahden Seurahuone which was chosen the best city hotel in Europe 2015.

After arrival, short drive to Mukkula Mansion. It is time to take a walk with truffle sniffers at the manor house’s milieu. Lahti is the only place in Finland where you can participate to truffle safari with trained dogs! After safari you can taste this highly valued delicacy!
Later in the evening, distillery tour at Restaurant Taivaanranta - take a look behind the scenes!
Lahti has a genuine whiskey distillery called Teerenpeli distillery right in the heart of the city! Distillery tour offers you a guided tour of preparation of whiskey and samples of products of the house made from the best Finnish barley and fresh Salpausselkä ground water!
After the tour, delicious dinner with seasonal, rich and local flavors and the restaurant’s own brewery’s craft beers and ciders is offered at Taivaanranta restaurant.

DAY 2: Gingerbreads, Vellamo’s herbal sauna experience and local beer
After breakfast drive to Hollola. This unique visit shows you the secrets of grinding rye flour and baking gingerbreads with new twist: Finnish rye!
The program starts from local mill called Okeroinen Mill owned by Kinnari family. The owners, Terhi and Teemu are the 14th generation keeping the farm. At the mill you grind your own flour from Kinnari family farm’s own grain. From the mill the visit continues to Kinnari Farm (about 10 minutes with car from the mill) where you will bake the gingerbreads to take with you! Day will end with coffee/tea and handmade salty pastry made from farm`s own flours in farm`s on-site bakery.

After visiting at a local farm, drive to a rustic Hollolan Hirvi located amidst beautiful countryside to experience Finnish smoke sauna with relaxing whisking and whisk massage! Before entering the sauna, you will learn about the importance of the nature in Finnish culture and hear stories of the traditional Finnish beliefs, ancient spells as well as effectiveness of sauna and used materials. Individual and relaxing whisking treatment includes at least two different types of whisks (for example birch, maple, oak, aspen, alder, linden, rowan, juniper), followed by whole body massage with birch whisks and honey/clay with herbs.

After relaxing sauna, it is time to get to know the history of the local and traditional beer called “Sahti”! The program includes beer school and tasting as well as local food: sausages cooked in the charcoal grill, elk meat balls (the specialty of the house), local cheese and other local delicacies in a rustic Hollolan Hirvi restaurant, set in a converted barn.

DAY 3: Tastes of Vellamo menu - regional journey of flavors
After breakfast, slow walk into to the forest. At the forest you’ll experience the powers of the nature and discover how to find most common edible plants, berries or mushrooms depending on season with a professional guide. While getting some gentle exercise and enjoying the greenness of Finnish summer or colorness of Autumn colors, you learn about the traditional use and benefits of plants that grow wild in our woods!

Day continues with special Vellamo lunch menu at Hotel Seurahuone’s restaurant. Free afternoon to explore the arts & craft and design boutiques at the centre.
Later in the evening dinner at Restaurant Roux, which locates in the center of Lahti, near the town hall. Restaurant’s tasteful, old and stylish interior in old farmacy honouring the old guarantees a pleasant visit. Inspired by seasonality, the head chef and co-owner Sami Häkkinen creates Roux’s Vellamo menu from local ingredients.

DAY 4:
After breakfast, drive back to Helsinki.
