Aurinkovuori hill is located near the idyllic Old Vääksy village and beside the Aurinko-Ilves hiking trail. From the hilltop you can see far in the directions of Lake Päijänne and Lake Vesijärvi. Rising towards the sun between the two lakes, Aurinkovuori is a part of the Second Salpausselkä ridge, and its highest points reach 70–80 metres above Lake Päijänne and Lake Vesijärvi. Aurinkovuori is one of the sites in the Salpausselkä Geopark.
On the Aurinkovuori hilltop there is an outdoor shelter with a campfire spot, and a scenic overlook offering grand views of Lake Päijänne. You can get to the outdoor shelter by either walking the upper trail (uphill from the sports field) or climbing the Aurinkovuori outdoor workout stairs. The outdoor shelter is not intended for overnight camping. The area offers illuminated outdoor trails (3 kilometres and 7 kilometres), forest paths and ski trails in winter. The illuminated stairs at Aurinkovuori have 40 metres of elevation and 239 steps. You can get to the stairs either following the lower Aurinkovuori trail past the indoor skating rink on the north side of the hill or walking about one kilometre along the Asikkalantie walkway towards the old centre of Asikkala. At the base of the stairs, there is a campfire site and a skiing area in winter.
Aurinkovuori hill, like the entire Salpausselkä ridge system, mainly consists of sand and gravel that was carried and stratified by the streams of meltwater from the continental glacier in the Ice Age. The Aurinkovuori area has an exceptionally thick layer of earth materials on the bedrock – almost 130 metres at its thickest. Sand and gravel allow water to filter through easily and, therefore, plenty of groundwater builds up when water from melting snow and precipitation soaks into the ground. This makes the Aurinkovuori area an important groundwater basin. Aurinkovuori is included in the national esker conservation programme that aims to preserve the natural diversity of eskers. The area is also included in the Natura 2000 network that was established to preserve natural diversity.
Parking is available at the sports hall car park, Asikkalantie 14, 17200 Vääksy.
