The 17.2 km Juustopolku (“the Cheese Path”) leads the traveller from Jyränkö in Heinola to Vuolenkoski village in Iitti through deep forests and over rocky hills. As the name suggests, Juustopolku is an old market route along which people from rural villages used to transport cheese to the Heinola marketplace, where they would sell it. Nowadays, Juustopolku is a hiking trail that is excellent for mountain biking, hiking and trail running.
Along the trail, the scenery changes from rugged spruce forests by Lake Konnivesi to clearings, lichen-covered rocks, groves and finally heathlands. For a brief moment, a landscape of green fields will rush past your eyes. The most interesting sight along the way is the massive boulder Kupparinkivi (“Cupper’s Rock”), which was moved to its current location by the continental glacier during the last Ice Age.
The route is marked with signs and white painted markings. There is also a trail map available at the starting points.
Located approximately halfway through the trail, the Läpiä lean-to is an excellent place to stop for a rest. However, it is also favoured by mosquitoes! For this reason, a more pleasant resting place can be found just a little off the Juustopolku trail: the Korvenlampi lean-to along the connection route leading to the Ilves trail.
If you are planning a long day trip on your mountain bike, keep in mind that Juustopolku, the Ilves trail running from Vierumäki to Jyränkö and the connection route between Vuolenkoski and Vierumäki create a trail network that provides plenty of ground to cover for an entire day. In the Jyränkö section, you will have to navigate independently from the final point of the Ilves trail to the beginning of Juustopolku.
From a mountain biking perspective, the trail’s difficulty level is medium, both physically and technically. When setting off from Jyränkö in Heinola, the shoreside trail with tree roots and stumps requires some skill and physical fitness, too, at some points at the beginning. After a challenging start, the trail becomes smoother and you can easily coast all the way to Läpiäntie. After crossing the road, you will face the most challenging tree stumps and roots on the trail as well as a steep enduro-style decline towards the Läpiä lean-to. When approaching Vuolenkoski, the spruce forests hide a few steep climbs and long stretches of single track that are a joy for even the most experienced mountain bikers. The final kilometres before arriving at Vuolenkoski are even heathlands.
There are a few short duckboard sections along the way. Some ditches may have to be crossed on foot. The height profile of the trail varies, but the climbs along the route are fairly small.
