Located next to the idyllic Old Vääksy village, Aurinkovuori hill rises between the lakes Päijänne and Vesijärvi, offering great views over both of the lakes. The high ridge dominates the landscape, with the highest point reaching 80 metres above the surface of the Lake Päijänne. Aurinkovuori hill is part of the Second Salpausselkä ridge and one of the main geosites of the Salpausselkä aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark.

Aurinkovuori hill is situated along the Aurinko-Ilves hiking trail and the area offers forest paths, illuminated outdoor trails of three and seven kilometres in length, and ski tracks in winter. On the hilltop there are two lean-to shelters with campfire sites. Next to the lean-to shelter situated towards the northern side of the hill, there is also a viewing platform with grand views over Lake Päijänne. You can get to this lean-to shelter by walking the upper trail, which starts uphill from the sports field, or via the lower trail past the indoor skating rink and Aurinkovuori outdoor workout stairs. The illuminated stairs have 40 metres of elevation and 239 steps. At the foot of the stairs, there is a campfire site, and in the winter a sledding hill and a cross-country skiing area. The other lean-to shelter is situated further along the seven kilometres trail, at the southern side of the hilltop. It offers a beautiful view over the farming landscape towards the Lake Vesijärvi. Please note that the lean-to shelters are not intended for overnight camping.

Aurinkovuori hill, like the entire Salpausselkä ice-marginal ridge system, mainly consists of sand and gravel that was carried and deposited by the meltwater streams of the continental ice sheet towards the end of the last Ice Age. The Aurinkovuori area has an exceptionally thick layer of soil accumulated on the bedrock – almost 130 metres at its thickest. Sand and gravel allow water to filter through easily and, therefore, plenty of groundwater builds up when water from rain and melting snow is absorbed into the ground. The groundwater reserves within the Aurinkovuori terrain are an important water supply for the surrounding community. Aurinkovuori is included in the national esker conservation programme that aims to preserve the natural diversity of eskers. The area is also included in the Natura 2000 network that was established to preserve natural diversity.

Parking is available at the sports hall car park, Asikkalantie 14, 17200 Vääksy, or at the Aurinkovuori car park along Asikkalantie road, close to the outdoor stairs, opposite Piekkolantie road.

You can also arrive at Aurinkovuori hill by public transport. Buses 40 and 42 can take you less than half a kilometer away from the start of the trail. Please check the current timetable for the bus at, there may be some changes from time to time.
