Kammiovuori, also known as the roof of Sysmä, is the second-highest point in Southern Finland and a great destination for a day trip. The top of the hill offers spectacular views far to Lake Päijänne and over the rugged rock land – the remains of ancient fold mountains formed almost two billion years ago.

An about four kilometre long marked trail winds through the area, and there is a nice outdoor shelter with a campfire spot as well as information boards about local nature and heritage along the trail. Besides the beautiful vantage point, natural sights of the trail include the impressive seven metre high glacial erratic boulder Linta and Hiskia’s Cave, which is a cave-like space between large boulders and is said to have been the dwelling of a hermit who once lived on Kammiovuori. Under the western cliff in the north end, there is a massive boulder deposit that consists of rocks which have fallen off the cliff. Kammiovuori is one of the sites in the Salpausselkä Geopark.

The partly rocky and steep trail with tree roots and stumps has been classified as challenging. Walking the trail takes about two or three hours. Although the walk is challenging, Kammiovuori is also popular with families with children. However, extra caution is required especially near the cliff and along the steepest parts of the trail. The trail can only be used when the ground is free of snow and ice.

You can get to the starting point of the trail by car or bike. Drive (or ride) along road 612 from Sysmä towards Luhanka for 24 kilometres, turn right towards Vintturintie, drive for 2 kilometres, turn left towards Nutturintie and drive for about 1 kilometre until you arrive at the Kammiovuori car park.
