The 12.6 km Päijänne-Ilves trail is a connection route from Padasjoki to the Tarus Hiking Area and Evo. In Padasjoki, the trail starts from the marina. Located in the vicinity is also the Kullasvuori observation tower from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view across Lake Päijänne. The high point of the trail’s first section is the beautiful Hietaranta spruce lane along which the nature lovers of Padasjoki set up a wild flower path in the summer 2020. After a short forest section, you will arrive at the Nyystölä fields and the Cudgel War memorial. After crossing a main road, the rolling fields turn into a forest environment at the heart of which cyclists can find the beautiful Nuijamiehenkolo lean-to camping site by a stream.
After the Nuijamiehenkolo lean-to, the journey continues onwards to the Frans Joosef Pond nature reserve and Lake Iso-Tarus, which marks the final point of the trail. On the shore of Lake Iso-Tarus, you can find a designated spot for a campfire, a beach and a camping site.
The route is marked with signs and yellow painted markings. There is a trail map also available at the Tarus Hiking Area. In Padasjoki, the starting point is the Padasjoki marina, where the summer café is a perfect spot for a break or dinner after your trip.
Along the way, the Nuijamiehenkolo lean-to is a great spot for a break. The Iso-Tarus shore presents good hiking structures and an opportunity for camping.
Päijänne-Ilves is a line trail, but combining a return trip to the starting point is easy along the village road running between Iso-Tarus and Padasjoki. The trail can be biked in both directions. You can also continue your journey from Iso-Tarus to the Evo Hiking Area and from there along the Aurinko-Ilves trail towards Vääksy.
When leaving Padasjoki, the first kilometres of the trail are accessible dirt road. After a brief forest section, the route continues along a field road past Nyystölä village. After crossing a major road, you enter a forest, but the terrain is still easy. When approaching the Nuijamiehenkolo lean-to, the trail becomes narrower, but riding your bike is still easy and fast. After the lean-to, the nature along the trail changes completely and what follows is a mix of short road sections and challenging small paths. The paths become more even just before arriving at the shore of Iso-Tarus. The path section of the western side of the forest road between Nuijamiehenkolo and Iso-Tarus is partially unsuitable for riding your bike, but you can easily pass this section along the forest road.
There are a few short duckboard sections along the way, but they are wide and cyclist-friendly. There are no large inclines or declines along the route.
