The 31-kilometre long Aurinko-Ilves trail leads you from the beautiful Vääksy setting towards the thick forests of the Evo Hiking Area. There is plenty to see and experience along the route: the high Aurinkovuori hill that is part of the Second Salpausselkä ridge and the stunning scenery, the Syrjänsupat kettle holes, the charming Kurhila village and the forests of Evo. Don’t forget to take breaks on Aurinko-Ilves, too, since there are many comfortable and beautiful lean-tos and resting places by bubbling little streams along the way. Popular destinations in the Evo Hiking Area include the area’s many fishing spots and cabins.
The route has been marked with signs and yellow/orange paint signals. In Vääksy, the actual trail starts from the sports centre, but you can start your journey already from the Päijännetalo parking spot, where you can also take a look at the route map. At Evo, the final point on the route is the Haarajärvi parking area, from where you can continue your journey deeper into the Evo Hiking Area trail network. For cyclists, an interesting addition to the network is the connection to Padasjoki along the Päijänne-Ilves route.
There are four lean-tos and camping sites along the way, of which Uusimylly and Kaupinsaari are located by a stream, making them the best locations for spending the night. The Aurinkovuori lean-to is located on top of the ridge on a viewing platform. The Second Salpausselkä ridge is also the home of the Kuurnamäki lean-to. From there you can enjoy a vast view of idyllic countryside and across Lake Vesijärvi all the way to the First Salpausselkä ridge. In Kurhila village, there is a camping area with a cookhouse and an information board in the yard of the club house Kuhilas. You should be extra careful on the route between Kurhila and Uusimylly since there are also horseback riders in the area.
When starting from Vääksy, the first few kilometres of the trail are wider cart tracks or ridge paths with good terrain. However, the trail is physically demanding because the route kicks off with climbing on top of Aurinkovuori hill. After crossing Kirkkotie, the trail terrain also becomes slightly more challenging in the Syrjänsupat section. In Kurhila village, the trail follows the borders of fields and also a road for a while until it becomes a smaller path when approaching the Uusimylly lean-to. After the Uusimylly lean-to, the trail alternates between forest roads and narrower paths. The final kilometres before arriving at the Evo Hiking Area are primarily forest roads.
Overall, the route is technically easy with some brief sections of medium difficulty. Physically, the trail’s difficulty level is medium due to the large differences in height along the hills of Aurinkovuori. The trail has only a few short duckboard sections.
